What are essential oils?
Essential oils are the most powerful part of the plant. It is thought to contain the life force of the plant and is what protects the plant. The oils are distilled from leaves, stems, trees, flowers, roots, bushes, fruit, rinds, resins and seeds.
It takes hundreds or even thousands of pounds of plant material to produce a tiny amount of oil. For example, it takes 60,000 rose blossoms, to provide only one ounce of rose essential oil.
Essential oils are very concentrated. You need only use one drop at a time. A little goes a long way.
Oils can be applied topically, taken internally, and/or diffused. Using a cold temperature diffuser is important to retain the therapeutic value of the oil.
Why does quality matter? How do I know I’m getting good quality essential oils?
These are REALLY important questions. Quality is key and here is why.
Oils can penetrate your skin more swiftly than any modern medicine.
According to a study by Jean Valnet, M.D., “essential oils can affect every cell in the body within 20 minutes and are then metabolized like other nutrients.”
Essential oils are molecularly small, smaller than cells, and even smaller than viruses.
Tests have shown that oils reach the heart, liver and thyroid within 3 seconds when inhaled and found throughout the bloodstream in 26 seconds when applied topically.
There is no regulating system on essential oils. The only current regulation is the FDA requirement that there is 5% essential oil in a bottle to label it “pure, organic, or therapeutic grade’, ONLY 5%! That means the other 95% can be carriers, chemical extenders, and solvents.
There are 4 grades of essential oils are Grade A, B, C and D. Here are their differences:
- Grade A oils are therapeutic, medicinal quality. They are made from organically grown plants and steam distilled only once at low temperatures. (Heat destroys an oil and the therapeutic constituents will evaporate!)
- Grade B oils are food grade. They may contain synthetic chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, chemical extenders or carrier oils.
- Grade C oils are perfume grade. These often contain adulterating chemicals and solvents to gain higher yield. Solvents, like hexane, are known carcinogens; they can be cancer causing, and are in many store-bought oils. They may also be diluted 80-95% with alcohol.
- Grade D oils are actually floral water and are aromatic only. Floral water is a byproduct from steam distillation. Many companies use 5% of this floral water and fill the rest with a carrier oil and call it essential oil. It is totally different from a true essential oil.
Considering their absorption rate and how essential oils are used on/in our bodies and in our environments, QUALITY IS KEY, especially at these concentrations. It is important to take the time and find a company you can trust, and one that makes Grade A essential oils.
Young Living makes only Grade A essential oils and essential oil-infused products. Grade A essential oils are the only oils I would use and recommend.
How do I find a company I can trust? Here are some questions to ask:
- Does the company have their own farms or do they buy oils from where they can when they can? If they do not have their own farms what controls do they have in place? Do they provide the seeds? Do they know if fertilizers or pesticides are used?
- Do they know if the ground is organic? It must have been organic for a minimum of 50 years to be truly organic. Most companies will say it is organic if it has been 7 years.
- Can anyone visit the farms any time, see how the oils are made, take a tour?
- Do they test for when the peak harvest is? Do they harvest at peak or throughout the year?
- Does the company use ‘complete distill’ which means they use the plant material again and again, or do they use first distillation, using the plant material only once?
- When they finalize production of the oil do they test it for purity, and if so is the testing only in house or do they also do 3rd party testing?
These are just a handful of important questions. I have been to Young Living’s corporate offices and farms. They have answered all these questions and then some to my great satisfaction. They are AFNOR and ISO certified, well trusted and well established.
Besides smelling good, what are the uses of essential oils?
Essential oils have a long history of use that dates back to the early civilizations of the Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Babylonians, who used essential oils for skin and beauty, physical healing, emotional balancing and spiritual communion. They are referenced in the Bible more than a thousand times.
Essential oils are more than a fad. Today, we are recognizing and making wiser choices in creating healthier lifestyles for our families and our communities. Like our ancestors, essential oils are used to enhance physical wellness, inspire positive emotional states, enhance spiritual awareness, purify our environments and refine our beauty routines.
In Europe, they are used extensively, even in hospitals!
Are Young Living essential oils safe to ingest?
Young Living has GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) certified essential oils called Vitality™ dietary essential oils. These oils are specifically packaged for internal use making it easy to know which oils are safe for internal consumption.
Vitality™ dietary essential oils come in four distinct categories: Herb, Spice, Citrus and Supplement.
Can essential oils provide emotional support?
Yes! When I first heard that the oils could support emotions I was dumbfounded. I had no idea! I wanted the science behind this, so here’s what I learned:
The olfactory bulb lies at the very top of the sinus cavity, and it detects odors when air rushes past it carrying aromatic molecules. The olfactory bulb is an extension of the brain and extends into the limbic system, which is where we process emotion. Our sense of smell goes to a gland called the amygdala, which is our fight flight freeze area of the brain. The amygdala plays a major role in the storing and releasing of trauma. The only way to stimulate this gland is with fragrance or the sense of smell.
So, we can see why aromatherapy and essential oils have been used throughout the ages for emotional well-being. Through the use of essential oils, we can support areas like learning, behavior and motivation.
Gary Young, founder of Young Living, studied for years with renowned aromatherapy masters and has taken oil blending to a whole new level. He created dozens of blends that are amazing for supporting emotions, such as Acceptance™, Believe™, Forgiveness™, Gratitude™, Harmony™, Joy™. Believe™ is my favorite with its woodsy fresh aroma. These oils are magnificent in supporting positive emotional states. They can be used in the diffuser or worn as a non-toxic option to perfume. And the more you are in contact with them the better as they help us with our emotional response to the stressors in the world around us.
You don’t have to be an aromatherapist to enjoy the benefits of these oils. Simply start at your own pace and learn as you go.
Essences of Alchemy offers several classes on increasing energy levels and reducing emotional stressors using the oils. Here is a video demonstrating the power of essential oils for emotional release. We have 101 classes available to everyone and advanced classes available to Essences of Alchemy Matrix members. What about if someone needs more energy?
For boosting energy I love the NingXia Red®, which is a beverage enhanced with many essential oils. It is power-packed with vitamins, minerals and the amino acids and tastes fabulous. I take it twice a day in small shots. It is a favorite in my house. My kids actually never let me drink my own glass, so I always have to share unless I drink sneaky style when no one is looking.
There are oils too: Longevity Vitality™, which is a combination of powerful oils including Thyme, Frankincense, Orange and Clove; Peppermint essential oil is invigorating to the senses. Just one drop of peppermint rubbed between the palms and inhaled is excellent for alertness.
So, if I have a big day I might add some oils to my NingXia and I know I am supporting my overall wellness beautifully.
Can essential oils be used for pets? Which oils work best and how do you properly use them?
I like to recommend getting reference materials actually. There are many things that can happen in a pet’s life, so being prepared with your own book on hand 24/7 is very empowering.
Humans have about 20 million olfactory (smell) receptors at the top of their sinus cavity and can detect 10,000-40,000 different scents. Dogs, by comparison have about 220 million receptors and can detect odors at concentrations 100 million times more than we can.
Our pets have heightened senses, differing sizes and physiologies, and therefore, very sensitive in nature and to their environments. So, go low and slow.
Use caution, common sense and good judgment. Dilute heavily and use in moderation. Observe how the animal responds. Care for each animal differently.
Here are some general precautions and guidelines:
- Do not lock your pet in the room when diffusing an oil. Allow them to step away, if needed.
- Do not use oils near the eyes, mouth, nose or sensitive areas.
- Do not use “hot” oils such as Wintergreen and Peppermint.
- Do not use high phenol oils such as Oregano, Clove, Wintergreen, and Thyme.
- Cats do not carry enzymes in their liver to process oils high in phenols, ketones, and terpenes. Avoid using citrus oils, tree oils, and herbal oils, such as tea tree, clove.
- There is no need to douse your pet in an effort to get the oil onto their skin. An animal’s coat will wick the oil down the shaft onto the skin. Using a diluted drop of essential oil (as directed on the bottle or your reference manual), gently petting on the back of the animal, or applying on the paw pads is a great way to deliver the oils.
Young Living has an entire product line specifically designed for pets called Animal Scents®; making it super easy to know which products you can use safely and confidently. It is always best to use oils as directed.
Anything else that’s important for pet owners/pet business owners to know before they use essential oils on pets?
Most pet owners are concerned about odors in the home and tend to use store-bought, artificially scented air fresheners and deodorizers, like plug-ins, candles, sprays, etc.; all of which are listed in the TOP 10 MOST DANGEROUS chemicals in our home, according to the EPA.
Diffusing Purification® essential oil rids odors and purifies the air, and has received the most praise from pet owners for transforming the air in their homes, cars, etc.
Chemical cleaners used every day in our homes are easily overlooked and affects all of us negatively over time. Thieves® Household Cleaner concentrate is an all-purpose, cost effective solution for all your cleaning needs. It replaces everything under the kitchen sink. One bottle of concentrate will make 15-20 bottles!
The use of a great products like the Thieves® line instead of harsh chemicals and toxins is better for our human families, fur babies and our overall wellness, not to mention, the house smells fresh and inviting!
How can our attendees order Young Living Essential Oils, and which oils would be best for beginners?
Well you only need 10-20 oils to get a really good base going. I would recommend starting with the Premium Starter Kit, which comes with a diffuser as well as 11 popular oils great for everyday use.
It’s a perfect way to begin your essential oil journey with hundreds of uses that you can start using the moment you get your kit!
95% of the people I talk to start here.
